Why Bat Surveys Matter
Why bat surveys matter more than you might think 🦇
Bat surveys are often one of those things that only come onto a client’s radar once a project is already underway but in reality, they can be a critical part of the planning process from the very start.
Bats and their roosts are legally protected in the UK, which means that if there’s any potential for them to be present on a site, surveys are essential before works can progress. What does that mean in practice?
- Surveys are seasonal and missing the survey window can delay a project by months
- They can influence design, layout and timing of works
- In some cases, mitigation or licensing may be required before permission is granted
We often see projects where a simple early check could have avoided delays later down the line. The key is understanding the potential constraints of a site as early as possible not just from a planning policy perspective, but from an ecological one too.
